Self Guided Learning in Brentwood

What Is Self-Guided Learning?

Self-Guided Learning™ is an American Heart Association course format that combines two independent components:

  1. Self-paced online learning — completed on any compatible device, at any time
  2. A self-guided skills session — completed at a CPR Verification Station™ learning center

Learners complete both components independently. Upon successful completion of both, they receive an American Heart Association Course Completion eCard for BLS, ACLS, or PALS. The eCard is valid for two years and accepted at hospitals, clinics, and healthcare facilities nationwide.

This format differs from classroom learning, where an instructor leads both the cognitive and skills components in person. It also differs from blended learning, which pairs online cognitive content with an instructor-led skills check. Self-Guided Learning removes the instructor from both components, giving learners full control over their schedule.

The course used for this format is HeartCode® Complete — an American Heart Association Self-Guided Learning course for BLS, ACLS, and PALS.

HeartCode® is a trademark of the American Heart Association.

How the Online Learning Component Works

The online portion of a Self-Guided Learning course uses True Adaptive™ learning powered by Area9 Lyceum. This technology continuously assesses each learner’s knowledge and confidence, then adjusts the content path in real time.

Learners spend more time on topics they haven’t mastered and move quickly through content they already understand. The result is a personalized, competency-focused learning experience that does not waste time on material a learner already knows.

Key facts about the online component:

  • Accessible on any compatible device — desktop, laptop, or tablet
  • BLS online course takes approximately 1–2 hours to complete
  • ACLS and PALS online courses take approximately 2–3 hours each
  • Learners progress at their own pace — no scheduled start times
  • Online completion alone does not issue an American Heart Association Course Completion eCard

The online learning activity must be completed before scheduling the self-guided skills session at the CPR Verification Station learning center.

How the CPR Verification Station Learning Center Works

The CPR Verification Station™ learning center at Safety Training Seminars in Brentwood allows learners to complete the hands-on skills session independently, using a Voice Assisted Manikin (VAM).

During the self-guided skills session, the learner:

  • Performs required psychomotor skills independently
  • Receives real-time, objective performance feedback from the station
  • Is measured against American Heart Association-defined criteria for compression depth, rate, recoil, and ventilation
  • Can repeat the skills activity as needed to achieve a passing score

There is no live instructor, virtual coach, or facilitator present during the skills session. The CPR Verification Station learning center provides objective measurement against AHA guidelines throughout.

BLS skills sessions take approximately 30 minutes. ACLS and PALS skills sessions also run approximately 30 minutes each for the HeartCode® Complete format.

Upon successful completion of both the online learning activity and the self-guided skills session, the learner receives their American Heart Association Course Completion eCard the same day.
